Gallery Exhibitions
In 1998 I held my first one-week gallery exhibition in Kyoto and then
Tokyo. The Kyoto leg was held at Gallery To-bee (pronounced Towbay)
and the Tokyo leg at Gallery Kaya. Both venues introduced my first
sculptural efforts - a three-piece series of a close friend comprising
figurative & abstract busts and a two-piece figurative &
abstract series of another friend together with several large
wheel-thrown vessels and horary (eto) animal figurines. The
busts were developed with the loose theme of bringing out the unseen
side of human nature - in other words, its secrets - tangible and
intangible. Here, I used a mixture of glaze painting, airbrushing,
splattering and dipping approaches to produce surreal countenances on
some of the pieces while under-and-overglazing other pieces with
tattoos based on body ones usually sported by gangsters but hidden
from sight by clothing.
In 2000 I held my second exhibition at the Tsuta Salon in Tokyo
concentrating solely on sculptures of a theatre actress (three-piece
series), an architect (two-piece series), classical guitarist (two-piece
series) and radio DJ (one-piece series). For this exhibition, I
carried on the theme of tattooing not only in the painting mode but
also in a carving mode resembling a mixture of Polynesian tattooing and
marble latticing seen in magnificent buildings in India, and yet of
my own design. The central piece of the show was a male torso
sculpted as a personal tribute to Egon Schiele, an artist that
inspires me so very, very much.
